Maryland is the latest state to join the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Direct File online tool for the 2025 filing season, which will enable the preparation and filing of taxes electronically and free of charge.  

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announcedthat the state of Oregon is the first to join up for the IRS Direct File program – which allows taxpayers to file their tax returns directly with the IRS online – for the 2025 tax filing season.

A group of 21 tax officials from 18 states is urging the Department of Treasury (DOT) to disband the IRS’ new Direct File pilot program, citing potential tax filing problems they said could arise from confusion on the part of taxpayers.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is moving forward with piloting its Direct File tool in 13 states that will allow people to directly file their taxes next year by only using the online tool if they meet certain criteria.

Cybersecurity

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) made several recommendations to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and others to improve coordination of cybersecurity requirements among Federal agencies to protect data shared with state government agencies.

Commercial data services can help the efficiency of program integrity activities for certain government agencies.
